New York boasts multiple aquatic ecosystems including two Great Lakes, two "Great Rivers", the mighty Hudson, the Long Island Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean, not to mention all of the embayments. Thus, there are multiple habitats, food webs, and aquatic plant and animal assemblages which could be impacted by invasive species, harmful algal blooms, marine debris, climate change, and overall anthropogenic activities. Opportunities also exist for sustainable economic development and cultural, social, and ecological benefit from these systems.
