In this segment from the "LI Maritime Museum Reception" video series, we sample some of the music that the 100 guests on hand enjoyed while celebrating New York Sea Grant's 40th anniversary at the Long
Island Maritime Museum on Great South Bay. This followed welcome remarks by NYSG's Director, Dr. Jim Ammerman, as well as NYSG's Assistant and Associate Directors, Cornelia Schlenk and Dr. Kathy Bunting- Howarth, respectively.
"I am very proud to be a member of New York Sea Grant," said Bunting-Howarth. "It’s a great opportunity to be 'Bringing Science to the Shore.' I like to think of Extension as that bridge. We’re there to bring the science from the academic community from our great higher institutions of learning throughout the state of New York to the folks at the coast of Ithaca’s line—whether you’re a government official there, or whether you’re a recreational fisherman or whether you’re just trying to take your family to the beach to go fishing maybe and can’t decide which one to go to."
The event's attendees - NYSG's partners, advisers, business owners, researchers, graduate students, educators and staff - listened to the afternoon's soothing sounds in the sunshine just a few short days after two tropical storms had torn through much of New York, reminding us of the coast’s vulnerability.
