Syracuse, NY, February 13, 2012 - U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) recreational boating statistics for 2010 showed that more than 72 percent of the victims of boating accident fatalities were not wearing a life vest.

in-water demonstrations of all the various types of lifesaving flotation devices offered daily at the February 15-19 Central New York Boat Show.
These “You Can Save Your Own Life” demonstrations, sponsored by New York Sea Grant (NYSG), the USCG Auxiliary, Kent Manufacturing and Syracuse Pool & Patio, are part of NYSG's BoatUS Foundation award-winning Discover Clean & Safe Boating Education campaign. They will be given by NYSG Coastal Recreation and Tourism Specialist Dave White in the Horticulture Building on:
- Thursday, February 16, 7pm;
- Friday, February 17, 7pm;
- Saturday, February 18, 12noon and 2pm
- Sunday, February 19, 12noon and 2pm
The CNY Boat Show and Sale will showcase more than 500 all-new models of power and sail boats, including cruisers, sport boats, pontoon boats, and personal watercraft, along with a few luxury motor yachts on display. This largest upstate selection of boats will be on display along with over 250,000 square feet of exhibit space in three large buildings at the New York State Fairgrounds: the Center of Progress, Horticulture Building, and the Toyota Exhibition Building.
In addition, the USCG Auxiliary and NYSG are offering
a free young boater safety training course in the Seminar Room of the Horticulture Building at the Fairgrounds. Ten-to-17-year-old youth who want to legally operate a boat in New York State waters in 2012 may complete this Young Boater’s Safety Certification Course, which will begin on Thursday, February 16 from 6-8:30 pm and end on Saturday, February 18 from 10 am to 3:30 pm.

slm22@cornell.edu, is required and space is limited to 20 youth. Participants, who will each receive three free admission passes to the Central New York Boat Show, must attend both sections of their chosen course for a total of eight classroom hours of training and must complete a proctored exam at the show.
Another education program, all of which are free with boat show admission, is "Freshwater Angling," with Captain Tony Buffa at 6:30 pm on February 15 in the Center of Progress. Capt. Tony shares 35 years of experience as a charter captain fishing for walleye and other popular freshwater fish.
