Another potential source of petroleum pollution is the discharge of bilge water contaminated by oil from leaking inboard engines.  To help minimize this problem, marina customers should be encouraged to install bilge pillows which absorb the oil from the water.  These pillows come in a variety of different sizes, shape and materials.  Some incorporate micro-organisms that break down the oil into water and carbon dioxide.  Of course, the best way to address this problem is to make sure engines are in good operating order and to check for leaks on a regular basis, repairing any that are found.
