Nonpoint source pollution refers to contaminants exposed to rainfall or snow that are picked up and carried by surface water runoff or ground water into coastal waters, streams and rivers.  Studies have shown that this nonpoint source pollution is responsible for about 80% of the coastal water quality problems found nationwide.
