#SeaGrant50: Video Illustrates Sea Grant's 50 Years of Science Serving America's Coast
By Paul F on Mar 14, 2016 at 4:00 PM

WASHINGTON, DC, Thursday, March 08, 2016 - The 30-second trailer (above) and 10-minute short documentary (below) - both created by The University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute's John Karl, with assistance from Stephen Wittman, LaDon Swann, and Darcy Wilkins - shine a spotlight on a selection of the national coastal science program network's accomplishments since its inception in 1966. In that year, President Lyndon Johnson signed The National Sea Grant College and Program (NSGCP) Act, establishing the Sea Grant Program.

In honor of Sea Grant's 50th anniversary year, which begins in March 2016, the national network is organizing a year of outreach efforts to highlight how it has successfully been "Putting Science to Work for America's Coastal Communities" for five decades.

More on the many ways the program is being commemorated and how you can be play a part via our related blog entry, "#SeaGrant50: Sea Grant Announces 50th Anniversary."

And for news on New York Sea Grant's coastal topics of focus, see www.nyseagrant.org/currentsarchive and www.nyseagrant.org/resourcesites.

Today, the National Sea Grant College program is a network of 33 programs based at top universities in every coastal and Great Lakes state, Puerto Rico, and Guam. These programs --  each of which has formed a federal-state partnership to create and maintain a healthy coastal environment and economy for its U.S. state or territory -- represent partnerships between universities and the federal government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), allowing Sea Grant to direct federal resources to pressing problems in local communities.

During Sea Grant's 50th Anniversary, The NSGCP will gather and share related content from the individual 33 Sea Grant programs on social media via its social media channels using the hashtag #SeaGrant50:
