Oswego, NY, July 15, 2010 - The 2010 edition of the new Clean & Safe Boat will be among the classic and antique boats at the July 23-25 Skaneateles Boat Show. The educational vessel is traveling New York’s freshwater shoreline to educate new and novice boaters, and remind experienced boaters, about the gear required and recommended for safe and legal boating on NY waters in 2010.
White reminds boaters about safety checks as vessels are put in the water for the season, which include: ensuring flares have not expired, fire extinguishers are properly charged, and checking life jackets and anti-spill devices.
"We're trying to raise awareness and promote good stewardship so that boaters and non-boaters utilize our waterways in a sound way," says White.
"For a lot of us who have been boating for a lot of years, it's really easy sometimes to forget all the various things you need to have on board. So this is an opportunity for folks to walk by and see them all laid out on a boat and say, 'Oh, there's the PFD I need to get' or 'There's the other equipment I forgot I have to have on my boat.'"
The “made in New York” 19-foot-long pontoon boat is equipped with four types of PFDs, safety flares, chartbook, paddle, green cleaning products and other gear all labeled. The bilge sock and fuel nozzle bib are two easily-used items to reduce or eliminate fuel spills.
Those visiting the vessel at events this summer may qualify for a Boater’s Bag with information on New York State boating regulations, the Clean Vessel Act, boat handling and navigation aids, US Power Squadron Float Plan, and the US Coast Guard Aids to Navigation System.
Boaters who pledge to be clean, green and safe can spin a wheel for prizes such as a floating keychain, bilge sock, Nautical Seaway Trail Chartbook, and poncho.
This “clean and green” boat is powered by two electric motors, has a generator and has a plug-in for shoreline recharge. It will be among the more than 80 boats on exhibit at the Skaneateles Boat Show on the north shore of Skaneateles Lake.

This Grumman aluminum pontoon boat comes direct from the Marathon Boat Group assembly line at Marathon, NY, for its education and information mission. It can be called a descendant of the engineering that created lightweight, stretch-formed aluminum aircraft use as carrier-based fighter planes during World War II.
