Oswego, NY,  October 20, 2012 - The leaves are falling and the days are getting colder, which means it's about time to put your boat away for the winter. In this edition of Discover Better Boating, we have some tips to help you keep your boat safe and secure all season long.

Joining New York Sea Grant's Coastal Recreation and Tourism Specialist Dave White is Wayne Carroll in Brewerton Boat Yard, located on Oneida Lake. "Wayne, what is the first thing that someone needs to think about when getting their boat ready for the winter?" asked White.

"Make sure it's properly winterized before you put it to bed for the winter," said Carroll. "One of the things we like to see done is shrink wrap or cover it with a canvas that is properly vented. Also, be sure that you put in mildew-retardant bags up in there to kill any mildew that may form."

The Discover Better Boating in New York television series of monthly tips is a collaborative, educational outreach effort by New York Sea Grant, the Boating Industries Association of Upstate New York (BIA) and YNN, Syracuse.
