Oswego, NY, May 15, 2013 - The Discover Better Boating in New York television series of monthly tips resumes May 18. Past topics have included fuel efficiency, boating safety, a how to buy or rent a boat, trailering, storage, US Coast Guard courtesy vessel examination, and boating destinations in NY. This month's topic is on technology's influence on the boating industry. In other words: boating apps for smartphones and other electronic devices.

"We all carry iPhones, iPads, tablets and other smartphones wherever we go and one of the great things about them is that we can get some important boating information from those devices while on-board," said New York Sea Grant's Coastal Recreation and Tourism Specialist Dave White.

"So, Today we’re going to look at a few apps to help prepare you for a day on the water, keep you safe, and have a great time boating."

"There are several hundred apps available for boaters including boating games for kids to get them prepared and having fun on the water as well."

"Many of us don't boat where we live, so one of the first things we want to do is check the weather. We can do that using the Boat Weather app."

"Now that we know the weather for the day, we can find out where we want to go by checking out boat ramps."

For all the details on the various boating apps that you can use while planning your day out on the water, check out the video clip below for more from NYSG's White.
