Sustainable and Resilient Community Extension Educator (multiple positions available)

New York Sea Grant (NYSG), one of the largest of the state Sea Grant programs, is a cooperative program of the State University of New York (SUNY) and Cornell University. Residents of New York State depend on our coasts for ports and marinas, trade and recreation, and their contribution to economic and environmental sustainability. NYSG is currently “making a difference” by supporting about 45 important research and outreach projects on issues such as shoreline protection, fisheries, aquatic invasive species, water quality, and harmful algal blooms.


What You Will Do

You will provide leadership in the extension and outreach programming and tools that are developed, implemented and evaluated based on the needs of stakeholders. Provide guidance and training to communities related to planning and permitting processes to achieve sustainability and resilience goals and help access funding/grants for implementation (e.g., required Hazard Mitigation Plans, Emergency Operations/Management Plans, related coastal management plans as appropriate). Coordinate with the other extension professionals in both Connecticut and New York to efficiently and effectively achieve the goals of the Long Island Sound Study (LISS). Other responsibilities include:

• Providing leadership for the design, execution, and analysis of program evaluations.

• Promoting and encouraging partnerships and collaborations both within and between states of Connecticut and New York in the Long Island Sound watershed

• Assisting communities with implementing/understanding existing sustainability and resilience programs such as the FEMA Community Rating System and hazard mitigation grants, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Climate Smart Communities, Sustainable CT, and other programs that could benefit from broader implementation.

• Working with researchers to translate their research results regarding climate change impacts into a format/tool useable by communities.

• Informing and educating communities about the availability of best practices for obtaining grants assistance.

• Actively incorporating Environmental Justice and Equity best practices. 

• Providing educational resources and technical support to professionals tasked with providing guidance and increasing capacity for municipalities to achieve sustainability and resilience goals under the LISS Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CCMP), and at times, customizing them as appropriate for the region.

These positions are full-time and will be located one position in each of the following:

• Stony Brook, New York (Suffolk County, Stony Brook University)
• East Meadow, New York (Nassau County, Cornell Cooperative Extension)
• Elmsford, New York (Westchester County, Cornell Cooperative Extension)

The position located in each office will serve local communities in that county: Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester.

Each is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.



What We Need

We are looking for individuals who excel at building relationships with multiple stakeholders to identify and address stakeholder needs and translates science-based research. In this role, you will engage with and provide education and outreach for local governments and LISS coastal communities to increase awareness of sustainability and resilience. Additionally, we need applicants who have:

• Master’s degree in environmental/ marine policy, coastal management, resilience, coastal oceanography/engineering, planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), natural/marine resources, or other relevant fields.

• 2+ years of experience working in local governments, non-profits/NGOs, or other professional organizations and communities in the field of sustainability/resilience, planning and/or adult education.

• Demonstrated superior communications (both public speaking and writing) and interpersonal skills.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting.

• Advanced computer skills and the ability to use computer and long-distance education technologies in this area of extension programming expertise.

• Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.


If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you!  There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

• 5+ years of experience working with municipalities/local communities. 

• Experience in writing and managing grants. 

• Familiarity with Cooperative Extension/Sea Grant Extension non-advocacy, research-based, and/or educational programming. 

• Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

• American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
