Over thousands of years, the water level of ancient Lake Iroquois went down. This water level change generated water currents that eroded sand from the lake's southern shore and deposited it underwater just off its eastern shore, forming a sandbar. Sand on the beaches and dunes of the eastern shore come from this sandbar.
