What can you do to help?

Boosting the amount of trees and shrubs in your own backyard is a start! Replace unused sections of lawn with native species of trees and shrubs. Instead of using plants that don't supply food and shelter for birds, plant ones that do. Some plants that birds like are:

  • Serviceberry
  • Trumpet creeper
  • Pagoda dogwood
  • Hawthorn
  • Common elderberry
  • American yew
  • Viburnum
  • Red maple
  • Pin cherry
Other things that you can do to help migrating birds include providing a source of fresh water, keeping cats inside your house, and avoiding the use of pesticides and herbicides.
