New York Sea Grant (NYSG), one of the largest of the state Sea Grant programs, is a cooperative program of the State University of New York (SUNY) and Cornell University. Residents of New York State depend on our coasts for ports and marinas, trade and recreation, and their contribution to economic and environmental sustainability. NYSG is currently “making a difference” by supporting about 45 important research and outreach projects on issues such as shoreline protection, fisheries, aquatic invasive species, water quality, and harmful algal blooms.

What You Will Do

You provide leadership for the outreach program of the Long Island Sound Study (LISS) in New York City and the Western Basin. Develop educational programs that lead to behavior change related to the protection and restoration of Long Island Sound’s natural resources; you will address climate change impacts on the Sound and environmental justice communities through programming. Work with teams to develop innovative programs and materials designed to resonate with diverse and underserved communities.  Other responsibilities include:

• Providing leadership for the design, execution, and analysis of program evaluations.

• Working with other LISS communication and outreach staff to develop funding priorities and Work Plans to translate technical information about Long Island Sound, its health status and trends, and efforts to restore it.

• Coordinating the development, implementation, and effectiveness of other educational tools and programs that lead to behavior change.

• Working with LISS Work Groups and teams on high-priority initiatives (e.g., Environmental Justice, Habitat Restoration and Stewardship and the Watershed and Embayments Work Groups) to identify and communicate key issues and topics and involve the public in those initiatives, specifically underserved and environmental justice communities.

• Collaborating with Outreach Specialists based in New York and Connecticut to coordinate activities. 

• Integrating Sea Grant Extension and University coastal resources programming initiatives in a statewide, regional, and/or national context.

This position is full-time and will be located in Flushing, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

What We Need

We are looking for an individual who excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders to identify and address stakeholder needs and translates science-based research. In this role, you will work within the New York City/Western Basin region and develop a unique and impactful extension and applied research program. Additionally, we need someone who has:

• Master’s degree from an accredited university in marine science, environmental science, environmental education, natural resources management, or equivalent field.
• 2+ years of experience working with an outreach or similar public education program. 
• Good working knowledge of computer skills needed for layout and design of educational materials and newsletters.

• Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.

• Experience working in team settings with staff from numerous agencies to work on mutually agreed-upon goals.  

• Experience implementing and evaluating programs that change human behavior, specifically using social marketing techniques.

• Experience working in environmental justice communities or underserved communities.
