Oswego, NY,  October 19, 2013 - In this edition of Discover Better Boating, we'll learn the importance of filling out surveys or questionnaires at boat shows and other events.

"It's critically important that we, as boaters, take the time to participate in these surveys and answer those questions so that we can all have a better boating experience," said New York Sea Grant's Coastal Recreation and Tourism Specialist Dave White.

Joining White is Kathy Bunting-Howarth, NYSG's Associate Director from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, who discussed how research impacts boaters.

"There are many ways that research can help improve the boating experience," she said. "For example, it can help improve policies, facility management issues, boater safety. Also, a lot of the research examines environmental issues, so that research can help to create a better boating experience."

As for what research is going on now that would of interest to boaters, Bunting-Howarth said, "Cornell University investigators are trying to understand where boaters are getting information about aquatic invasive species so that they can better help the boating community to understand what to do to prevent the further spread of those species."
